Challenge
The customer needed to integrate their IBM Z Platform data with multiple cloud-based data warehouses in order to gain more insights into their valuable IBM Z Platform workloads. However, attempts to move to a hybrid cloud model were hampered by the time and CPU necessary to share data between IBM Z Platform and Google Big Query using TCP/IP based transfers.
Solution
A customized solution was designed using Luminex’s FICON based MDI Cloud Data Sharing platform. This approach enabled the client to transfer data to multiple cloud providers within their SLAs all while using extremely minimal CPU cycles on the mainframe. Multiple business groups ended up using the Luminex MDI platform to successfully implement their hybrid-cloud infrastructure.

Results
The deployment of Luminex’s MDI Cloud Data Sharing solution greatly increased the ability for the customer to integrate their integral on-premise mainframe data with cloud environment. The customer was able to export IBM Z Platform data to a cloud data warehouse and while also pulling data into IBM Z Platform to increase their operational efficiency and get more out of their IBM Z Platform applications. Testing showed a 99% reduction in CPU time, 95% reduction 2 Luminex Software Inc. in MIPS, and a 68% reduction in elapsed time while transferring 50 GB files. The result was a successful cloud integration that allowed the customer to keep up with ever increasing demand for data processing without a costly upgrade of their existing infrastructure.

The customer was able to maximize their IBM Z Platform investments by storing and sharing their mainframe data with a cloud-based data warehouse. Utilizing a hybrid-cloud strategy allowed them to streamline their IBM Z Platform operations and gain valuable insights into their real-time operations. Being able to bi-directionally share data between IBM Z Platform and their cloud-based applications brought valuable business intelligence to their IBM Z Platform environment and helped further secure the positive business impact of the mainframe in their environment.
